Representatives of the Colombian State met yesterday with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OEA), Luis Almagro, to seek mechanisms, both formal and informal, to support the Attorney General of Venezuela, Luisa Ortega. Ms. Ortega has been under fire in Venezuela for standing up to dictatorial and anti-constitutional practices by Nicolás Maduro’s government in Venezuela.
Last month, Ortega was accused of “provoking chaos” in Venezuela, after pointing out that the magistrates appointed by the government didn’t comply with the legal requisites to be able to hold their respective positions. She also discovered and voiced concern over additional violations to Venezuela’s Constitution, including Maduro’s request for a National Assembly, which only the people can demand. These actions, which were made in order to defend the democracy and the public order, angered government officials, including the magistrates and Maduro. Ortega now faces an unconstitutional and deceitful trial by the country’s Supreme Court of Justice.
Fernando Carrillo, Procurator General of Colombia, exhorted Almagro to call on all entities from Ibero-America to support Ms. Ortega, as she was only fulfilling her duty. He also made clear his concern for Venezuela, as the country’s political institutions have faced an internal “coup d’état” from the government of Maduro.
Luis Almargo has yet to comment at the time of this writing.
