In a match defined by great goalkeeping and close calls, Medellín’s two rivals revisited ‘El Clásico Paisa’ on Sunday at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium.
Atlético Nacional’s 2-0 win over rival Independiente Medellín got started in the 28th minute when veteran forward Dayro Moreno put a header past Independiente goalie David González. Independiente had its fair share of opportunities to respond, but Nacional keeper Fernando Monetti played brilliantly to keep a clean sheet.
To put the cherry on top of the victory, substitute Vladimir Hernández came in for Moreno and scored the second goal in the 91st minute. After González had stuffed Hernández’s first attempt, the ricocheted ball came right back to the striker’s feet as the Independiente goalie was unable to corral it and Hernández didn’t miss on his second opportunity.
Nacional maintains full control of first place in the league this season as Independiente is six points behind in fourth place. Atlético Nacional returns next week to take on second place Deportivo Cali in a key matchup as Los Verdolagas seek their 17th league title.
