Shakira’s fame may transcend the borders of her natal country, but the international pop star is still looking out for Colombia. The 41-year-old singer from Barranquilla announced in an Instagram post this week that she is opening two schools for children in both her native city as well as in Cartagena.

According to her post, the schools will educate more than 2,000 kids annually.

“There will be 2,160 children that will be attended to over lands that will be more than 20,500 square meters of education opportunities to pave the road to peace,” the post read.

The effort from the singer and dancer was also aided by La Caixa Foundation and the FC Barcelona football team where her husband Gerard Pique plays.

The two schools will be overseen by Colombia’s Barefoot Foundation (Fundación Pies Descalzos), which is trying to break up cyclical poverty and violence in the country by educating thousands of children. So far, more than 75,000 children have been educated thanks to the foundation’s efforts.

Shakira went to Barranquilla and Cartagena this past week to officially inaugurate the opening of the two schools.
