Colombia will be the home to the Organization of American States’ (OAS) General Assembly next year, per an official announcement from Colombia’s government.
The 49th edition of the meetings will take place in June of 2019 in Bogotá after accepted by Colombia’s ambassador to the OAS.
There are 35 member nations in the OAS that include countries from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as membership from the United States.
“Following the offer that the government of Colombia made on Sept. 13, the ambassador Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado today in the ordinary session of the Permanent Council (of the OAS) made the candidacy of the country official for it to be the site of the organization’s General Assembly on June 2019,” said a report from Colombia’s Foreign Affairs office. That press release added that it “reaffirms the backing of the member states to the compromise made by Colombia.”
This year’s General Assembly was held in the OAS headquarters in Washington DC.
“Ambassador Ordóñez in his participating emphasized the multilateral effort and the importance that Colombia has given to the inter-American system, representing the OAS,” the press release continued. “It’s an organization that maneuvers the dialogue in a realistic manner confronting the challenges that the hemisphere faces today, which makes the multilateralism and the regional approach are the best manner to respond to our society’s demands.”
